Description

The RTP-MF is a portable radiotelephone, made by IEMI in Bucharest [1]. It was made in eight type variants (1 MF to 4 MF, each simplex S or semi-duplex SD) [1]. Six batches totalling 2,905 portable radiotelephones were also equipped to order, and IEMI made 185,867 accessories for them (antennas, cases, battery chargers) [1]. IEMI made radiotelephones under a licence bought in 1968 from the Swedish firm SRA (Svenska Radio Aktiebolaget), later modernised by IEMI itself; they were used in industry, on the railways, in rescue services, agriculture, transport, construction, by the police and the fire brigade [1].

IEMI’s production table lists the transceiver units of each variant: 18,450 RTP-1MF-S (1974–1985), 413 RTP-1MF-S-A (1975–1978), 50 RTP-2MF-S (1974), 2,792 RTP-3MF-S (1974–1985) and 43,426 RTP-4MF-S (1971–1985), together with tens of thousands of antennas and battery cases [2]. A transceiver unit cost 6,900 lei, a battery case 80 lei, an antenna 260 lei and a helical antenna for the 4MF-S 480 lei (prices set in 1982) [3].

Annex III.2.15 gives its prospectus: for the railways, police traffic control, fire brigades, industry and agriculture, normally simplex but adaptable to semi-duplex, with a sealed construction for the most varied conditions. The set comprised the transceiver unit, battery cases and an antenna; the charger and holster were not included (the annex also shows the IART-2 charger for portable radiotelephones). The 1 MF covered 30–41 MHz, the 2 MF 56.5–58 MHz, the 3 MF 68–88 MHz and the 4 MF 145–175 MHz, with up to 6 channels 25 kHz apart, 0.7 W (0.5 W for the 4 MF) and a sensitivity of 0.7 µV (0.8 µV); it worked from −40 to +55 °C and ran for about 20 hours on Ni-Cd batteries at 5% transmission [4].
