Description

The R1070 is a military portable VHF FM radio station of 7 W, made by IEI in Bucharest and designed at the ICE research institute in Bucharest [1]. After 1989 it was made by IEI’s successor, ELPROF SA [1].

ICE’s VHF professional radio communications laboratory designed radio stations mainly for the army, with civilian versions for oil fields, forestry, building sites and agriculture; they were made in ICE’s microproduction workshop, at IEI (and after 1989 at its successor, ELPROF SA) and at IEMI [1]. Work on new frequency-hopping military radios was abandoned after 1989 for lack of funds [1].

Chapter V of the book gives a range of 20–70 MHz with 25 kHz channel spacing, FM, 4–8 W and stable links over 15–35 km; the complete set weighed 17 kg [2]. Made in large numbers, it was used as a portable set and for service links in signal centres and in columns on the move [2].

It could work stationary or on the move and be carried on any land, sea or air vehicle [3].

Its prospectus also lists civilian uses in oil fields, forestry, building sites and agriculture; it was supplied in a transport case with a 1.5 m whip, a 10 m mast antenna and three sealed Ni-Cd batteries, giving at least 24 hours of work [4]. The prospectus gives 4–8 W, while the institute’s table gives 7 W [4].
