Description

The R1071 is a military portable VHF FM radio station of 7 W, made by IEI in Bucharest and designed at the ICE research institute in Bucharest [1]. After 1989 it was made by IEI’s successor, ELPROF SA; ICE also built a prototype remote control for changing its channels [1].

ICE’s VHF professional radio communications laboratory designed radio stations mainly for the army, with civilian versions for oil fields, forestry, building sites and agriculture; they were made in ICE’s microproduction workshop, at IEI (and after 1989 at its successor, ELPROF SA) and at IEMI [1]. Work on new frequency-hopping military radios was abandoned after 1989 for lack of funds [1].

Chapter V of the book describes it as the modernised R1070, for 30–80 MHz with 1 kHz channel spacing, FM and 7 W; its range was 10–12 km on the move with a 1.2 m whip antenna, 20–30 km stationary with a mast antenna and 20 km in telegraphy with a wire antenna, and the working set weighed 7.5 kg [2].

It was developed mainly to reduce the weight of the working set, for FM telephony (F3E) and AM telegraphy (A1A) with automatic tuning, and was made in large numbers [3].

Its prospectus gives a frequency deviation of up to ±5 kHz, 1 µV FM and 0.5 µV AM sensitivity, 75 dB selectivity beyond 30 kHz and five hours from its own battery; it also mentions civilian uses in forestry and on building sites [4]. It gives the complete set as 10.5 kg, while chapter V of the book gives 7.5 kg for the working set [4].
