Description

The R3520 is a portable VHF radio station of 1.5 W, made by IEMI in Bucharest and designed at the ICE research institute in Bucharest [1].

ICE’s VHF professional radio communications laboratory designed radio stations mainly for the army, with civilian versions for oil fields, forestry, building sites and agriculture; they were made in ICE’s microproduction workshop, at IEI (and after 1989 at its successor, ELPROF SA) and at IEMI [1]. Work on new frequency-hopping military radios was abandoned after 1989 for lack of funds [1].

It was a portable set for reconnaissance units, made at IEMI until 1991 [2].

Its prospectus describes a portable FM simplex transceiver, used stationary or on the move, supplied in a transport case with antennas, throat microphones, batteries and spares, also in an industrial version with a wire antenna [3]. It covered 44–50 MHz on six fixed frequencies, with a range of 7 km on the whip, 20 km on a wire antenna and 3 km on the emergency antenna; the prospectus gives 1 W, while the institute’s table gives 1.5 W [3].

Section V.3 says IEMI made 96 R3520 stations in 1980–1984 and then 476 of the R3520 M in 1985 [5][4].
