Description

The R3931 is a military portable short-wave SSB radio station of 30 W, made by IEMI in Bucharest and designed at the ICE research institute in Bucharest [1]. Its working set weighed 10 kg; it worked stationary or on the move, could be dropped by parachute, had a detachable remote control panel and matched its antennas automatically within 3 s [2]. Two prototypes were approved in 1984, and IEMI made it until 1991 [2].

ICE’s short-wave professional radio communications laboratory took over in 1966 the staff and work of Electronica in this field; it designed radio stations, first-class receivers and accessories such as antennas and relays, mainly for the army, with civilian versions for the oil and forestry industries, building sites and agriculture; they were made at IEMI and IEI [1].

It was intended for reconnaissance units [3].

Its prospectus describes a sealed modular set made up of the R3111 receiver-exciter with a detachable control panel, the transmitter and a 12 V / 7 Ah Ni-Cd battery, with a folding 2.7 m antenna, a wire antenna, remote control over up to 500 m of telephone line and automatic antenna matching within 3 s; the transmitter was protected against antenna damage, short or open circuit [4]. The prospectus gives 28,500 channels, at least 20 W (5 W reduced) and a weight of up to 15 kg with the battery, while the chapter text gives 30 W and 10 kg [4].
