Description

The M 5401 is an electronic haemoglobinometer, made by IEIA Cluj-Napoca in Cluj-Napoca and designed at the ICE research institute in Bucharest [1].

Together with the Ministry of Health, ICE drew up a national medical equipment programme; the prototypes of its medical electronics laboratory went into production at IEIA Cluj-Napoca (19 types), IEMI (3), IEI (2) and in ICE’s microproduction workshop (19) [1]. As demand grew, production of some of them was taken over by IEI [1].

ICE’s prospectus calls it Hemomat M 5401 and describes a counter of red and white blood cells: the diluted blood is drawn through a microscopic orifice between two electrodes, each cell producing a pulse that is amplified and counted, with a numeric display and a built-in oscilloscope; the description above as a haemoglobinometer comes from another part of the book [2].
